Rest in Peace Maynard Ferguson

I've been removed from the news loop and just found out about this today. I saw Maynard once live in a small venue and he totally blew me away (literally). He was a great educator and will be missed. I don't know if he knew Christ, but hope he did. What an addition to the horn line in heaven!

Update on the house

The roof is done except for a very small portion. It really looks nice. (I know... where's the pictures?!)

All 4 skylights are in and trimmed out.

The tile is being installed in the bathrooms and foyer.

Drywall is going up in my office and bathroom in the garage.

I've purchased all the appliances for the main kitchen.

We had a couple of benches built for the kitchen table and also had two platform beds built. The carpenter that did this for us is my former high school band director!

I'm waiting on a second estimate for the HVAC. Hoping to save a little on that, but I fear there will only be higher prices from anyone else.

We're hoping to move in Labor Day weekend. Not sure that'll happen, but it is a goal. If nothing else, we will have a cookout for the family and some of the contractors.

We are celebrating a couple of milestone birthdays this weekend. My Mom turned 75 today and my oldest turned 21 yesterday. Amazing how the years are flying by!

Pictures coming (when I get time to get on the home computer - which I haven't had on for a couple of weeks).

Progress!

Logs are done! Now that contractor just needs to do some more caulking and a bit of staining to finish.

Roof is 1/2 done. Two skylights yet to cut in.

Windows going in today and tomorrow.

I've got a ton of pictures on the camera, but no time to download them to the computer... sorry. I'll try to do that this weekend.

We've hired a drywall contractor to repair some of the rooms and prep for paint. He will also drywall my new office, bath and storage room in the garage. This guy has already worked for me at my current home, so I'm confident he will do a good job. He quoted me a fair price as well.

Money is running short once we get everyone payed to date. I've got to come up with a few thousand more to make final payments. Please pray that I will be able to work enough to take care of these expenses. The cost of everything has increased so much in the last year! Praise: The Lord has been providing me with extra opportunities to pick up some extra hours. I got 5 more just last night. This weeks total is 89 hours. I will trust Him to continue to provide.

We will probably end up doing some of the finish work after we move in. This isn't what my wife wanted, but there is a need to compromise some in the name of saving a little money. We really need to get our 1st house on the market by mid-September. Before the market softens any more...

I promise to post some more pictures soon!

Trenching and drainage

I did some trenching yesterday. This is to take water and septic to and from the garage. I also plan to put a couple of electrical conduits in the ditch so that I can add switching between the house and garage if we want and also pull phone, internet and network cables to my office. I also dug some trenches for the gutter downspouts to feed into to draw the rain water further from the house so that we don't have the water issues in the basement.

I was able to put one of the 4" lines in one of the trenches today and get it covered with dirt. Anytime you dig, there is extra dirt left over. I'm hoping to pack most of it down into the trench, but will probably have to come back with the shovel and wheelbarrow to get the extra dirt up and put in a pile by the garage.

The log work has begun on the house. The new logs are a bit smaller than the original, so there will be a few places inside where we will have to add some trim to cover the open spaces between the new logs and the existing walls.

I also found that some of the wood located on the foundation cinderblocks has rotted along with the logs. I think the log contractor was going to ignore this and just put the new logs in place without replacing the other wood, but I saw it and made him make the repairs. I think I will need to do some further repair to this wood in the future. I will also have to keep a better eye on the contractor to make sure he does what I expect him to do.

I'm also having a few struggles with my builder. He seems to want to shortcut on a few things which I believe need extra effort and work. The plumbing to the garage really needs to be below the freeze line in the soil. He has installed the grinder pump near the freeze line, but part of that tank is at grade. This exposes the tank to potential freezing in the winter. No one wants to have a waterline burst due to freezing. The same goes for a septic line. I guess I'll just call him in the middle of the night when I have a problem. I have told him where I wanted it. He doesn't think it will be a problem. We'll see...

Then there's the issue of the roofing debris. Up until today, the roofers weren't doing a good job of cleaning up. Today, there was a new guy and he spent most of the day picking up all the debris. It looks much better and is safer for the kids to be there. I'm glad they finally got it together on this point.

Tomorrow, I will spend most of the day there installing more drain lines for the gutters to drain into. I need to run my conduits from the garage too. We also need to pick out the rest of the bathroom fixtures and get them on site so the renovations on the bathrooms can continue and reach completion.

My target date for moving in is the week of August 27th. I'd love to have the family and some friends over for Labor Day at the new place. My wife and daughters have laughed at me for mentioning that. If they'd just get busy and help out more, it really can be a reality.

Pray for me. That I will be diligent and hard working. Also that I will be patient with my family as I push for work to get completed quickly.

Updates and pictures coming soon.

The extra shift that I thought I'd picked up evaporated today. There are problems with the generators on site and they will not be testing on Saturday as planned.

I'm still waiting for the HVAC estimates. Hope they come in soon and low.

Logs!

I've got to take some pictures of this...
The logs were delivered to our supplier today. We were blessed to have someone else needing an order at the same time. This saved us close to $600 in shipping. It was unexpected. God's timing, again! That cash savings will go directly to the air conditioning fund.

The new logs will be installed this weekend. It's getting exciting now!

Roofing work continues. One of the attic fans is installed and I wired it in. It's taking some of that heat out very nicely. Two new skylights were installed. They really open up the loft area and let a lot of light in. I'm glad we decided to add them. I don't remember who's idea it was, but it really makes the room bigger and more useful.

I just picked up yet another shift of overtime. This will also go to the air conditioning fund.

We are still waiting for estimates for new HVAC equipment. I was hoping to get through at least the first year without upgrading, but it looks like we will be better off installing the new system now. To properly cool the home will take multiple systems. The main one will be in the basement to cool the entire first floor. This will be a standard system. The second and third ones will be in the two attic sections to cool each of the 2nd floor areas. These will be heat pumps. The best time to install the attic units is now while we have access open for the wiring and cooling lines. We also have some ceiling areas open which will allow for easy installation of the blowers and ductwork.

It's getting a little crazy around here!

Roofing has begun

The new roof is going on as we speak. The workers find it easier to work overnight in the (relatively) cooler temperatures. They are making slow progress, but at least it is something. They installed one of the attic fans last night and I connected it this morning. It's good to start drawing all that heat out of the house now.

We are getting a couple of quotes for new HVAC next. Not sure we will be able to afford it this year, but it will be good to know what we are looking at.

I'll post more pictures soon.

I'm taking a couple of days off from work to go to a Drum and Bugle Corps show in Allentown. This is an annual event for me that I count on going to. It helps preserve my sanity! This show is one of the major ones. And it's just one week before finals, so the Corps are at their top performance standard. I'm really looking forward to it!

Gotta go get a little rest. It's going to be a busy weekend.
