Waiting for word

Still haven't heard if the team has landed in China yet. Hoping they got a little rest on the long flight.

They plan to tour the Great Wall today and a few other touristy things. Then off to MBHOH in the evening. Hope they take lots of pictures and post to the blog.

I miss them already but I'm excited for what they are doing and what the Lord will do in their lives!

Today two of my daughters left on a trip to Maria's Big House of Hope in China to serve on a team from Show Hope. I'm very excited about this trip for them! Wish I could be going too.

Pray for them... that they would be open to what the Lord has for them to learn on this trip... that they would serve graciously and with great love... that they will be safe and feel secure with each other and the team.

I will miss both of them while they are gone and look forward to hearing all the stories.

It's been SO long! I think Facebook has killed the blog. But after reading Emily's post, I decided to dig this old thing up and post.

Not a lot going on. Just seems like all I do is work and sleep. The kids are growing up around me and I feel like I'm missing it all.

We sent our youngest off to his very first day of school today. The last first-first day. I have mixed feelings about that but he was so excited that I couldn't be sad.

No time for more right now, but I'll be sure to come back soon and post more.

I had almost forgotten about this site. Life tends to be that way. Lots to do or nothing. But with as many kids as I have, is it any wonder that I have time to get on the computer at all?! Good thing I get a bit of time at work!

It's really been a long time since I've been here! Guess I haven't had much to say. Maybe that will change soon. I kind of miss this.

I do want to share the SCC has a new recording out as of this week: Beauty Will Rise. I'd say that this could be some of his most stripped down and emotionally open work yet. Totally understandable when considering the place he had to go to experience this. Such agony and anguish... losing a child in an accident involving another child... I don't think I could be this open this quickly. The witness to the faithfulness and love of God provided by the Chapmans is what walking the talk is all about.

I've been gone a long time! Facebook has just about killed my blog... lol!

I know some (or most) of you probably already know about the new SCC album, but I wanted to spread the news here as well.

New disc is scheduled for release on November 3rd. Titled "beauty will rise", this one promises to be just as inspiring and personal as all of Steven's work. Maybe even more so considering the place in his life where he has been when writing it. I don't know. All I know is that I will definitely be in line to buy it as soon as I can. First single to be released is called "heaven is the face". I've included the lyrics below. Very personal stuff here. Can't wait to see how this ministers to so many!

It's been one year today...

Praying for this young man today. Maria is no longer in this world, but Will has to stay for a while. I have no idea what or how he is feeling. I have never lost a sibling, much less had one die as a result of an accident I was involved in.

Several of the blogs I read regularly feature posts today about this wonderful family.

I didn't expect to read this one, but apparently she is using her blog and other writing avenues to help in the healing. Pray for her. She is mom to both and hurts in ways that few can comprehend. And yet, her witness is strong!

I am thankful for the writer of this other blog. He also lived through the event last year (although it was in a very different way and from a very different perspective). He has given a window into the world of the Chapman family that I would never see if not for his postings. Thanks Jim!

Seems like forever since I've posted... Facebook has taken its toll.

Not a whole lot of new stuff happening.
Still working as many hours as I can get away with and not sleeping enough. Private school and college tuition tend to have that effect. Many who follow me on Facebook know that I am a grandfather. I love watching the changes in my oldest daughter as a result of having her own child. I love her (same as I always have) and praise God that He has protected her all these years. She is becoming a great mother. It's a lot of fun to watch.

I missed the tour that SCC and MWS did this year (and last year). Real sorry that I couldn't get out to one of the dates. Closest was in Baltimore, but I was working (big surprise!). From what I've read, the tour was a great success. I'm real happy about that. It's something I've been pushing for for years. I always felt that those two would make a great combo.
I recently went to Kelby's blog and found lots of pictures and commentary from recent days in the life of our favorite artist. She has continued to keep close tabs on the Chapman family and all the neat things that are happening for them.

Cudos to SCC for his recent awards. He definitely deserves all the acclaim that the world can give. His talent is well documented and a true gift to us all. Hopefully I will be able to get to Nashville this Fall to visit with the Chapmans a bit and extend my congratulations in person. With the upcoming wedding of Caleb, this will make two weddings they have had in quick succession. So happy for both Emily and Caleb - that they could find someone of like mind and spirit to spend their lives with. Truly a blessing!

Quickly approaching is the 1 year anniversary of the tragic death of Maria Sue Chapman. I still feel their pain for this tremendous loss. Glad that there is some joy in May to help offset the despair that will inevitably decend in a little over a week. I don't know how they have been able to hold up. As I watch the blogs and twitter, I see only Marybeth staying "out there". The rest of the family are keeping quiet (except for SCC on tour as he speaks from the stage). Wish they would share, as this helps us all. I still pray for Will. I know he will forever struggle with everything surrounding the event. I hope my readers will continue to lift the Chapmans to the Throne often.

Hard to believe that we are already in May. Time sure does pass quickly as we get older. I'm hoping to take some time off this Summer and play with my kids and vacation a bit. We surely need the break!

Until then, I will continue to work as many hours as the Lord allows so that I can keep finances controlled. We are so blessed In so many ways!

I'll try to update more often in the next weeks. Being on day shift at work for the last 20 weeks has killed my computer access during work hours. I miss night work for some of that freedom. I'll probably stay on days for another 13 weeks as that shift allows for more overtime on weekends and nights. Too many bills to pay, but grateful for the means to pay them.

Maybe I'll even post some pictures soon...

Hard to Believe...

It's been almost a month since I've posted to this blog. I've been busy to be sure, but not THAT busy.

Recently, a friend of mine showed me a picture of four Indian siblings who are in need of adoption (preferably together). I really felt that I needed to inquire about them. Unfortunately, India will not allow our family to adopt them. They don't want the family adopting to have more than 6 children total (including the adopted ones). Not fair. I really would have liked to bring them home.

I also have spent some time reading Kerry Hasenbalg's blog. How sad that they are having to walk this road. But praise God that Kerry can see with eyes that are on the Lord. Yet still, I can see her pain and she is allowing us to share in her suffering. What an honor to lift this woman (and her family) to the throne.

Some of my readers have asked if we will ever have our 12th. I have always replied that we are not trying but will accept any and all that the Lord sends our way. A few weeks ago, my wife shared with me that she thought she was pregnant. We struggled with this reality for a few days and then, just as we are getting adjusted to the miracle that is conception, it appears that we may have lost this little one. Please pray for my wife. We're not positive that the baby is gone, yet, but there are indicators that this is the case. I really don't have a clue (never having carried a child). I have gained a bit of insight through reading Kerry's blog, but still know nothing. We figure the baby was somewhere around 10-12 weeks. Still very early in development (some would say just a blob of cells - but we know better). I'm not sure how I feel. Either way. I'm saddened, but maybe just a little relieved. Hope that doesn't sound wrong. I would never hope for a child to not survive. Sad. Yeah, I'm sad. Maybe even a little depressed. That may be more a reflection of the distance I have allowed to open up between myself and God than anything else, though. Pray for me. I need to spend some time with the Lord.

David Lipscomb update

David lost his battle with cancer this week... or should I say he is now victorious with Jesus...

I got the news yesterday morning and have taken a day to gather myself and decide what to post. I have only met the family on a couple of occasions, so I don't really know them. I have emailed back and forth with Robi and their son DJ concerning a concert with The Following. That is pretty much the extent of our interactions over the last couple of years. Robi and I conversed over the web a little about David. Mostly just updates, but since the Caring Bridge site went active, that was where I was updated more.

I am affected by this family. David's testimony in the face of such a horrible thing as pancreatic cancer is an inspiration. The way he affected and influenced so many others in his consistent witness - that his desire was to see Jesus' fame spread through his suffering - I find this to be incredible. I don't know that I would be able to show this reflection of Christ in the same situation.

Much to ponder and pray about.

Here is the most current post from David's Caring Bridge site posted yesterday around noon:

10 days ago David was enjoying Coke floats, Coke in a bottle, talks with friends and family. In the past 48 hours David has been unable to even drink from a straw or chew ice chips.
The past few days have been gut wrenching.

This morning at around 10:30 AM David left here and joined the best celebration ever and I could not be happier for him.

Don't get me wrong, my heart is broken and I am bawling my eyes out, but I am soooo glad David is no longer suffering.

Last night was a long night. David's breathing was labored and difficult. At around 5 AM he had a high fever, but was still in a deep sleep. When I got up this morning, I talked to my Mom and she encouraged me to tell David it was OK for him to go. I hung up the phone and went into our room and told David how much we loved him, that we know how much he loved us. I told him I knew this part of the journey was hard for him and it was hard for us too. I told him we were all ready for him to go so he should go when ever he was ready to be in paradise. Just then the phone rang and it was DJ. We talked for just a few minutes. I walked back to the bedroom and waited for David to breath. And waited and waited.. then I realized he was gone.

I have to admit we are sitting around right now playing funny stuff on utube. I guess I will make a list some of those at some point now that I said that. Anyway what I meant to say is here is some general information you may be wondering about.

We are planning to have a celebration of David's life here in the Nashville area and a second one in Houston Texas. I will update with the details soon.

Prayers:
Please thank God for His mercy, His kindness and His blessings. Pray for our family. Pray that David's life shines on in the thousands of children he helped get sponsored, the dozens of Chin'o girls who have families thanks to his influence, the kids who look at their Bible on a regular basis thanks to his time at Teen CBS.... OK this list could go on for days - yeah just say thanks.

I am saddened to read this message from Geoff. I've only met David and Robi on a couple of occasions, but I have seen the work that they do and can testify that the love of Christ is strongly evident in their lives. Please pray for David and the family. This is a dark valley they are travelling.

As many of you know, I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working alongside David Lipscomb for the past ten years. We have shared many victories and challenges together as we focused our efforts on providing management and mentorship to artists and ministries. David has been has been a dear friend and a great source of encouragement to me. He and his precious wife Robi now allow me to do the same for them.I reflect back on this time a year ago, when David received the news that he had pancreatic cancer. The journey through surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation was a long and difficult one. Throughout this journey, I have had the hard blessing of walking with my dear friend. I have seen first-hand the pain and suffering, but much more than that, the Herculean courage that he has demonstrated. David Lipscomb’s faith is the real deal. In those hard, quiet moments when, to be perfectly honest, doubt has washed over me, he has never, ever wavered. He may say otherwise, but I am an eyewitness.A few weeks ago, the doctors confirmed David’s cancer had returned, and was present not only in his pancreas, but his liver as well. We would ask you to pray specifically that God would heal David in a way that would let him remain here with us. It's perhaps the toughest song on the planet to sing and when the stadium is full, the difficulty goes even higher. But when the hometown team calls, you gotta say yes! :-) On November 23rd, Steven will sing our national anthem for the Titans home game against the New York Jets. Steven will be relieved to know it will not be televised. :-)

My day started out terribly. On my way to work, I rear-ended

Hope everyone is well today. I got a laugh from reading this joke this morning and thought I'd share it.

I am a little sad today and needed the pick me up. I was supposed to have gone to Nashville this weekend for the Shaohannah's Hope Fundraiser, but couldn't go (and the reasons for that are part of what is making me sad). And seeing some pictures on Jim Houser and Grace's blogs isn't helping. I really wanted to spend a few minutes with the Chapmans and offer them encouragement and love. I also really wanted to hear Chuck Colson speak. Oh well... guess it was not to happen this year.

Pray for me, y'all. I'm in a bit of a valley in my life and need to make some decisions.

I went to bed last night at 11:30 feeling nauseous and woke up this morning with my stomach sinking and a feeling of dread.

Praise God that He is in control. May He have mercy on our nation as we embark on a period of control by the most liberal Congress and President of all time.

Pray for our President elect, that he would seek wisdom and appoint a cabinet that can advise him with righteousness.
Pray for our Supreme Court Justices, that they may have good health and last until a more conservative panel can be elected to appoint Constitutional Justices to the bench.
Pray for the unborn, that they may have a chance to live.
Pray for those who employ most of us, that they will be allowed to keep enough money to continue to employ us.
Pray for our military, that they may be able to do their job with a smaller budget.
Pray for our country, that we may learn from our mistakes and stop spending money we don't have.

Pray...

As a small consolation... at least we have gotten two liberal Senators off the books. Hopefully their replacements will give more thought to what is best for our country.

Sorry to have been missing in action for so long. I've been busy at work and home with projects and junk. As most of you know, I'm a grandpa now. My first had her first last Thursday. I'm a bit sick, so I haven't been pressing to go and see them. Plus there is that work thing... The pictures show this to be yet another amazing example of the handiwork of the Lord. All praise is His. Well... maybe a little praise goes to the new mom. She really worked hard!

Not to sound malicious (and many of you probably remember the struggle and heartache in my relationship with my oldest-if not, look in the archives), but it's payback time! Time for this child with a child to start learning how difficult that whole parenting thing really is. She has our full support and can ask us anything. Hopefully she will.

On another topic. I will not be able to attend the United tour, unfortunately. Part of it is ticket prices, part is timing. The venue in our area is a "premium" type venue. An orchestra type theatre. So they jack the prices up to justify the padded cloth seating and extra acoustics. Anyway, seems that the shows are selling out fairly well. I'm glad for that, but sad that those with smaller budgets won't be able to attend.

As most of you have already figured out... I now have a facebook account. Crazy how fast that news travels. Lots of links and strings connecting people there!
Good to get reaquainted with all of you.

I originally started the account so I could go look at the pictures from DJ and Amanda Lipscomb's wedding. Great pics btw.

I'm thinking of adding more groups, so I'm sure y'all will see many folks you don't know from other areas of my life. Don't be alarmed. Most of them won't bite.

I'm currently watching the Auburn - LSU game. War Eagle! Halftime with Auburn ahead 14-3.

I'm back... UUGGGGGGGG!! Auburn ended up losing to LSU 26-21. Their first real test and they failed. At home no less. Should cause them to drop out of the top 20. Oh well, time for another comeback year.

I'm late posting this, unfortunately.

Hopefully you all caught the segment on The Early Show this morning. Steven did a wonderful job with his first televised rendition of the revamped Cinderella. Caleb was there and playing as well. It sounded a bit strained vocally, but that is due to the video segment just before he sang. They showed a Maria montage and (I'm sure) that caused Steven to get a little choked up.

Just my opinion... I prefer the original version of the song. I know that the changes reflect the situation and the hope that the dance will go on, but I think it takes away from the drive of the song which is for parents to seize the moments while they have them because those moments will be over in the blink of an eye.

Anyway. I enjoyed seeing the segment and appreciate The Early Show for allowing Steven to come on and share. He was originally scheduled to make this appearance in the Spring, but had to cancel when the accident happened.

Just another observation... today is Wednesday. 16 weeks exactly since Maria died.
Pray for the Chapmans. Pray for Will.

My thanks to my friend Kelby for all her digging around. She surely has found another treasure!

Though it makes me sad to see more of Maria's memorial service, I truly appreciate hearing and seeing the testimonies to the legacy of this little wonder of God and her family. Take some time to watch and be reminded to pray. This was posted originally on Shaohannah's Hope.

This past weekend was to have been the date of the concert by The Following up here. Unfortunately, they had to cancel due to other commitments that Will had. Most likely related to school, though I didn't ask. Hopefully we will be able to reschedule sometime soon.

I'm still working too many hours. This is why I haven't posted as often as I used to. I'm just taking a few minutes now during a short break to post this now. Hope to be here more often in the near future.

I know... not really my style to post something like this, but I'm real happy for Emily and Tanner. I'm also glad to see that there is some joy in the Chapman household.

92.5 Hours!

Yep! That's what my time sheet says for this week...

Believe it or not, I've got close to 100 extra hours for this month so far.
I know, I know... I said I was going to cut back.

But the start of the school year brings all kinds of extra expenses. Cleats for three, athletic cups, socks, gloves, shirts and shorts for practice and thats just the beginning. Then there is gas to travel to all the games and practices, food on the road, booster fees, etc. Don't forget all the school supplies that schools are requiring parents to buy these days. I don't know about you, but I NEVER used 20 pencils in one year. The amount of stuff these teachers are asking for per pupil is outrageous. I think I'm going to make the purchases and keep the stuff under my control.

So. It's kind of hard to turn down the work with all the extra expenses. I'm tired, but not exhausted. I know that what I'm doing is enabling my wife to stay at home with the kids. I will not have had the time with them as little kids that I wish, but when you have a big family, expenses are big as well. I have taken time with each of them over the years. I plan to continue with one on one days, one on three days, one on ten days... you get the point.

As it stands now, I will need to work an additional 200 hours extra through the rest of the year to make our budget plus a few extras. I have two trips I want to take in November that I need to raise extra money for. One is a football game at Auburn. I'll be going with my sister and her two boys and plan to take two of my boys as well. The other trip is to Nashville for the Shaohannah's Hope fundraiser. I'll be bringing my wife, youngest son, oldest daughter and her baby (maybe - depending on when the baby is born).

Well, that's about it for this update. I'm sure to have more boring stuff to post in the next few days. After I get some sleep...

I hope to listen to the podcasts and post the links sometime next week. I will be in a class in Baltimore each day during local broadcast time, so that's the only way I'll be able to hear it.

I've been pretty busy lately. Seems like I'm running around in circles, though.
Please pray for me. I'm feeling a lot of pressure in the financial area. Also needing to make some decisions about moving or staying where we are.

I'm afraid I've gotten myself in over my head with the house we have now. I love the extra room and the land (16 acres), but we are 20 miles away from the school we are sending the kids to which means my teenage daughter will be driving herself and three brothers daily. Plus we have all the sports practices and other events to attend.

I drive 30 miles one way to work as well, which is taking a toll. It takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour each way. This all adds up over time. Way too much time away from family.

Not to mention the fuel costs... but it is a lot. We're probably driving close to 1000 miles a week (in three different vehicles). Then there is the added cost of maintenance on older cars. Gas has gone up almost $1.50 per gallon since we moved.

I've been looking into moving back North. Closer to work and school. I really don't want to move again so soon. Houses in the area where we lived are smaller. Lot sizes are small. No room for the kids to run wild and enjoy nature like we have here.

The other option will be to refinance the mortgage and take the kids out of Christian school. I'm not too impressed with the local public schools. Not that my kids couldn't adjust and probably thrive... It's just that I really like the extra spiritual stuff that they are getting in a Christian school.

And then there are the costs of college for my second daughter.

Just...

Today is Wednesday. The third of four day shift work days for me this week.
Only four - twelve hour shifts this week. That's compared to the last couple of weeks where I worked 84 and 96 hours.
Starting Friday, I've got 7 days off. Ordinarily I'd come in and work a couple of those days for the overtime. Not this time. I'm so tired of this place and the whole working everyday thing.

Ready for retirement!

They did really well! A bit of stumbling and hesitancy, but that is to be expected. I am touched by the love this family has for one another and for the world that they would share this most intimate and painful of life experiences with us.

I wish Larry could remember that her name is Maria, not Mary. Oh well... he is pretty old. lol!

Some of the questions from viewers were hard, some were expected. I was glad to hear encouragement from all of those who asked questions. Guess the folks backstage did a pretty good job too.

Concert Postponed

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I've had to postpone the concert by The Following.
I received an email from the band notifying me that Will Franklin has a conflicting appointment (not sure what type and it really isn't my business) on the planned weekend of the show.
I'm glad I hadn't purchased plane tickets or made hotel reservations yet.
I'm disappointed. I really wanted to have this show for the kids in September.

We're hoping to try again in a few months.

Decent Interview

Well, GMA gave them 10 minutes! That's 4 more than I expected.
I think that overall, the piece was well presented. I'm sure that there was a lot of good stuff from that day of interviews that could have added to the witness of Christ in this wonderful, grieving family. Probably enough for an hour long special. Maybe that is something that ABC ought to look into (hint, hint).

I had a conversation this morning that struck me...

A friend said... interesting that the Good Morning America piece air date would move around so much.

I explained, well that's fairly normal in media, things change, producers trying to get best slot and most time for stories they believe in, news events, etc. That said, I'm really, really hopeful about the piece being what we would hope it to be. I am so thankful for the amazing lady who is producing and Robin Roberts was so kind and amazing. It's been such a great experience. So I don't think the moving around indicates anything but good things...

The friend smiled, I was clearly not getting their point... and then said... all the moving around and the airing lands on a Wednesday?

It'll be 12 Wednesdays ago (11 weeks) tomorrow since Maria went to be with Jesus. Because of her life and a tragic accident, millions of people will bump into a faith they may not understand on television outlets that don't often talk about God. Would you pray that hearts and minds will be prepared? That people will not be distracted from what could be a divine appointment tomorrow morning and/or Thursday night?

So this is my prayer...
God, would you please give the Chapmans strength and courage... and Your peace and Your words. If you do, I'm crazy enough to believe that the piece Good Morning America will air tomorrow, and the interview the Chapmans will grant to Larry King live in LA on Thursday could change someone's day, and just might change their life. And May it be so. May it be so for many. May you get the glory. Asking my faith and the faith of my friends be encouraged and emboldened by what You're doing. And that You'll show us, in obvious ways even my eyes can't miss, after this week all You've done already through this loss of Maria. And we'll try to remember to give you the glory God. This is our desire, that You be honored. Amen.

So... It's On Everyone. It's Serious. This Is A Key Moment. Pray Friends. Pray On.

I've gotten a bit behind on my blogging lately.

Been busy with a few things outside the virtual world...

First a link to Jim Houser's blog so y'all can catch up on everything that has been happening in the Chapman household. I'm excited for the GMA interview. Robin Roberts is probably the best for this interview. She has extra sensitivity and compassion having gone through her cancer treatments and such.

Also of note. Maria's Miracle Fund has topped $610,000 raised to date! Exciting stuff for the orphans!

On to a bit of news...
I know some of my readers have been speculating on my announcement. Well, I hope I don't disappoint. I have been in talks with management for The Following and am about to sign a contract to bring the boys (men actually) up to our town for a show. I wanted to do something for our teens in the area churches. Kind of a back to school concert. There really is a lot that has to be accomplished to do one of these shows. Even a small one like what I've been planning takes quite a bit of organisation and planning. I've only just tapped the surface of what I need to get done, but the excitement is building in my house. I promised that there would be "no rabid fans", so I'll have to enforce that a bit! lol!

There will be more (different) news in a future blog. I've just got too much happening at one time to be able to share it all now. Busier than I've ever been in my life it seems.

A new verse has been added to Steven Curtis Chapman's song "Yours" from his "This Moment" CD. The song has added meaning now. I think this verse is further confirms that this man is a true God Follower! Please continue to pray for the Chapman family. The hurt is still fresh and healing is slow.

One other thing...

I was catching up on my reading. Old issue of CCM magazine. Editor, Jay Swartzendruber's column in the July 2007 issue (I know! I'm way behind!).

In the column, Jay is talking about how he has a tendency toward being a "super fan". He quotes William Wilberforce's book "Real Christianity" as follows

"It is undeniably clear that, in the judgement of the Word of God, the love of worldly admiration and applause is basically corrupt. For it tends to exalt and aggrandize ourselves; to pride ourselves on our natural or acquired endowments; or to assume credit and merit for our own qualities. It chooses this self-esteem instead of ascribing all honor and glory where they are due. It is false, therefore because it exalts that which we should demean. It is also criminal because it intrudes on the privilege of God."

Jay uses this quote to bring about his point which is to say that when we are speaking of those performers we love so much it is easy to place them on a pedestal. By doing this we are actually making them an idol. We don't mean to do this, it just happens.

Here's how Jay puts it:
"When I love someone's work or performance, I love it... often becoming enamored with who that influencer is. Yes, a super fan. When I'm at my best, I'm celebrating God's creativity and gifts as expressed through those whom He's created. When I'm at my worst, well... let's call a spade a spade, I'm committing idolatry. And if I'm doing that in the presence of an artist and directing it at them, it's safe to say I'm not urging them toward humility.
All that to say, there's a way to affirm people in their gifts, speaking life into their vocations and passions, without encouraging them to "exalt or aggrandize" themselves."

That is what I want to do. Affirm people in their gifts and urge them toward humility.

I really do wonder how hard it must be for them as they see more people that want to offer condolences. I wonder how hard it is on Will as he gets hugs and prayers from so many people. Pray for Will.

I'm hoping to host The Following in September for a concert. I've got to figure out how to offer them some form of the new normal while respecting their feelings. I want to help them have joy.

So... here's the thing.
I've been trying to find a way to get off the treadmill and stop working so hard.
I know that I'll still work for most of the rest of my life, but I'd like it to be more on my terms.

Anyway, I'm just wondering how hard it would really be to find a way to generate $300-$500 a day in residual income. Think about it... if I could find a way to make that amount every day of the year, I would have $109,500-$182,500 per year in income.

Basically, I can do this if I could just get folks to give me their left over pennies. Here is the basic math:

$.01/day ($3.65/year) from 50,000 people for life = $182,500/year
$.02/day ($7.30/year) from 25,000 people for life = $182,500/year
$.05/day ($18.25/year) from 10,000 people for life = $182,500/year

Seems pretty reasonable and easy, right?

Want to sign up and be one of my 50,000 friends? Just think about it! For less than the cost of a happy meal a year, you could support me and my family and free me up to do whatever I can come up with to fill my days. Think of all the time I could dedicate to playing with my kids. Or all the time I could donate to serving others...

So anyway... I know this sounds like I want to be lazy and not work. Actually, that's not the case. I'm just trying to find a way to free up my days so I can do stuff for others and still have family time. It just seems that with all the hours lost to working, I have to divide the remaining time between family and serving others. There just aren't enough hours in the day for it all.

There it is. All laid out for people to see. It really doesn't take much when you spread it out so thinly. Maybe I'll set up a website and see if I can get this thing going. I guess I'll need to check local laws and tax ramifications so I can stay out of jail.

Life Goes On?

Hard to believe that life can go on for the Chapmans, but it does. There are appearances to make and concerts to give. In the midst of the grieving, the living must continue. Work for the Chapmans (as much as we all view it as ministry) is doing the concerts. I know that sounds harsh, but they have bills to pay and they generate income by doing concerts and selling CD's. It is ministry, though and in order to minister, they must be filled.

Please, please continue to pray for this precious family as they step out into the public eye again. Pray for Caleb and Will. They both just had their wisdom teeth out!

Been on vacation...

Haven't posted since the family and I have been on vacation. Out to Indiana and Minnesota to visit family.
We've had a good time but are looking forward to taking that final trip back home in a couple of days.
I've been offline most of the time. Checked in on the Chapmans via Jim Houser's blog a couple of times just to pray and see how they're doing. Glad to read that they are taking some steps toward the new normal. Not that there will ever be a true normal again.
Just wanted to update on Maria's memorial fund at Shaohannah's Hope. They have collected in excess of $500,000 as of the 17th of June. Pretty impressive for just 27 days!
Here's hoping the Lord continues to minister to this wonderful family through this campaign.
Please remember to continue to pray for Will...

The more I read Kerry Hasenbalg's writing, the more I know she is uniquely gifted to speak to God's people. She has been touched by the Lord in her own loss and has offered healing touch to others out of that loss.

Jim Houser has been right beside the Chapman family as they have taken this (normally very private) journey in sorrow and suffering and hope. I am grateful that he was yielded enough to do as the Lord spoke.

Grace (I don't know her last name) has also been a part of this journey with the Chapman's. She was nice enough to post a picture of Shaohannah and Stevey Joy as they had a bit of fun. I know that seems strange to say given the circumstances, but children need to have fun. And even though they have lost their sister, they are still children. I'd imagine that those two have a greater understanding of where Maria is than most of us. They understand adoption on a personal level and know Christ personally. So why wouldn't it be a natural progression of thought and understanding to be able to find some joy in their lives knowing Maria is WITH CHRIST!

News From Franklin

It appears that Steven Curtis Chapman will be going back on tour much sooner than was originally believed. Actually, some thought he might never go out again. I was not one of those. This man is a minister of the Gospel and God has called him to a time of suffering and spiritual growth. Watch out for huge impact for the kingdom of Heaven in the future.

Maria's Miracle Fund has raised over $360,000 in about two weeks. That's BIG money! Grants for 120 adoptions!!

According to Scott Hasenbalg, the Chapman family is still going through extreme sorrow. No doubt! But Scott also quotes Steven as saying it is "the resurrection of Jesus that will get us through this, but it doesn't mean it won't be hard."

I still can't even imagine...

Maria's Miracle Fund

I've mentioned Maria's Miracle Fund before. This fund was set up to honor the life of Steven and Mary Beth Chapman's daughter who died just 11 short days ago.

Well, folks have really done a work of honoring Maria. There has been somewhere in excess of $275,000 raised so far. This will help close to 100 families with grants of $3000 each. I'm sure the fund will continue to increase.

I'm excited about this! It's hard to still deal with the rawness of the reason this fund exists, but the big picture is for more Marias to be loved and cared for, right?!

And maybe, just maybe, there will be a Maria in my household soon, if the Lord wills.

I was just over at Kerry Hasenbalg's blog and was reminded that only a short time ago she and Scott lost their precious preborn daughter Isabella Grace. Not that I haven't been praying for them still, but the fresh pain of Maria kind of put them to the side temporarily.

Kerry was visited by Mary Beth Chapman in her time of raw sorrow and pain. Kerry recently returned that grace.

I've been trying to come up with ways to express my grief and give some kind of testimony to what the Chapman family mean to me.

I'm just not able to give it my best right now...

I've spent quite a bit of time over at my good friend Kelby's site that she has created over the years as Steven Curtis Chapman's #1 fan (and I really think she is!). Please, please, please pray for Will Franklin!! The Lord is surely walking closely with this wonderful young man. I pray that he will be able to resist the attempts of the evil one to magnify his grief and cause him harm as Will tries to find the Lord in this tragedy.

According to reports from the Chapmans, Maria did make a decision to trust Jesus as Lord and Savior in the months prior to her untimely death. Nothing I Can Do But Pray

I've been out of sorts all day. Kind of walking around in a fog. I can really feel for the Chapmans. I have kids that are exactly the age of his that were involved in this accident.

They have set up a special site In Memory of Maria where folks can go for updates and to leave condolences. As of 4:30 this afternoon, close to 7000 comments have been left. I imagine this will continue to happen for some time into the near future. Steven Curtis Chapman and his family have touched and ministered to millions all over the world and many will want to return the love in some small way if they can.

If anyone would like to honor little Maria they can contribute to Shaohannah's Hope in her memory. I plan to be on that list. I've supported this great organization for many years and can attest to the great work that they do to facilitate adoption and orphan care.

MARIA SUE CHAPMAN, DAUGHTER OF STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN, DIES IN ACCIDENT AT FAMILY HOME

NASHVILLE, TN...5/21/08... At approximately 5pm on the afternoon of Thursday May 21st, Maria Sue Chapman, 5 years old and the youngest daughter to Steven and Mary Beth Chapman was struck in the driveway of the Chapman home in Franklin, TN. Maria was rushed to Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital in Nashville, transported by LifeFlight, but died of her injuries there. Maria is one of the close knit family’s six children and one of their three adopted daughters.

More than five years ago, Chapman and his wife MaryBeth founded The Shaohannah’s Hope Ministry after bringing their first adopted daughter, Shaohannah, home from China. The ministry’s goal is to help families reduce the financial barrier of adoption, and has provided grants to over 1700 families wishing to adopt orphans from around the world. Chapman is a five-time GRAMMY ® winner and 54-time Dove Award winning artist who has sold over 10 million albums and garnered 44 No. 1 singles.

My daughter's team was eliminated in the first round of the state championship yesterday. Still... it was a great year and they played really well except for a few errors that were the difference in the game.
They had been ranked in the top 5 for most of the year.

Next year looks to be just as good a team. They are only losing a couple of players and will keep their very strong pitcher and catcher and most of the infield.

My daughter didn't get much playing time this year, but it was her first year on varsity. They have said she will most likely start next year.

My son's team just missed getting to the state championship tournament by one game. They were a strong team this year as well. Losing only one senior, so the future looks good for them next year as well.

The year is flying by!

Hard to believe it's already the 14th of May!

Emily, I wish we could arrange to go the whole way to the left coast! I'd love to meet you in person. If I could take the time (and afford the fuel) I think that would make a great vacation. I've always wanted to tour the whole country.

So... speaking of fuel. The cost of a gallon has increased another $.15 this week. At this rate, the gas companies will definitely reach the predicted $4 per gallon by the start of summer. The goal was put before them by suggestive media and they are doing their best to make those prognosticators right. Sure would like to see this same media make them go the other way!

For every dime the cost of fuel goes up, our trip will cost us another $36. So far, we're looking at over $100 in the last couple of weeks. Guess all this overtime is a good thing.

I'm looking forward to getting away for a couple of weeks. We'll be visiting family and just slowing down a bit for a few days. No baseball or softball games. No school or work. I'm not looking forward to the drive time too much, but maybe I'll be able to get in some quality conversation with my wife and kids. That or catch up on my sleep while someone else drives a bit.

More Overtime!

I just picked up two more nights! WOOHOO!
Looks like we'll be able to take that trip to Minnesota after all.

With current gas prices, it was going to be cost prohibitive to make the trip, but now that I've gotten the extra overtime, not so much. Still, it will probably cost us close to $1400 just in fuel!

It's been quite a few years since we made the trip last. The kids barely remember it, but what they do remember is positive, so I'm hoping that will get them through close to 30 hours of drive time each way.

Obviously I haven't been here much as of late. For some reason, I've been pretty much offline except for very short excursions to a few sites. I miss my online friends. Funny how life takes turns and we get involved in other things. I wonder if John will ever stop in and say hi?

Baseball/Softball season is at full speed. I've only got three kids playing, but that still amounts to 3-5 nights out. The kids are enjoying it, though.

I've got a few kids that are struggling academically this year. Most of the struggle is due to them being lazy and not wanting to do the work. Very frustrating for me and their Mom. Not much time left to get the grades up. Hopefully I'll be able to adequately motivate them so they can finish strong and not have to take summer school.

I've been informed by my doctor that I need to cut out as many carbs from my diet as possible. This is to get my cholesterol under better control. Actually my problem is triglycerides. I've been taken off all my meds except for thyroid. My doc is hoping the low carbs and increased exercise will do the trick. I sure hope so. I'm glad to be off the meds. They were kind of expensive. I weighed myself a few weeks ago and weighed the most ever in my life. Kind of scary! I knew I had gained because my back hurt whenever I walked much. This week I got on the scale again and I'm down 7 pounds. I'm already noticing the difference in my back. 40 more to go and I'll be at a decent weight to manage. I'll take it slow, but am hoping it falls off quickly!

One of my coworkers got sick. He called me and I was able to make it in to work for him. Saturday (12 hours at time and a half) and Sunday (12 hours at double time)! WooHoo!!

I needed the extra cash too. Jehovah Jireh!

Who was it that mentioned the book by William Young - The Shack?
I went to Borders with the intention of picking up my copies of Randy Pausch's - The Last Lecture. I had them on hold, but it was past the three days. They'd sold them to someone else. From what I read, they have printed and sold 2 million copies so far! Hopefully that will be enough to provide for his family's future after he dies.

Anyway... The Shack... I had to buy something and someone had mentioned it to me as a good book. So, I'm about halfway through it and it's pretty good so far. I won't review or provide any commentary on it right now. Maybe once I'm done.

3 more hours and I'm out of here. Then I get to come back for 4 more day shifts. Joy!

I guess that explains why I haven't posted often lately. It just seems that there is the routine and not much else.

One thing that I did find exciting was watching an interview on Primetime Live. Diane Sawyer interviewed Randy Pausch about his life and the reality of his impending death from pancreatic cancer. There was a link there to the interview, but I think it has been removed. I plan on buying the book to read his story.

I'm sorry to read about this man dying from this disease. I recently posted about someone else who has survived (so far) his bout with the same disease. Why does the Lord take some and not others? I'm guessing He has a plan to utilize each life in unique ways for His purposes.

I only hope that I can be such an example of strength and dedication to the Lord if I ever get diagnosed with one of these diseases.

Another Birthday

Thanks to my cyber friends for the Birthday wishes!
I appreciate that y'all remembered. I worked both the night of and the night before, so most of my day was spent sleeping and getting some lunch before work.

I haven't been too faithful in my blogging lately. Not that there is much going on aside from the usual kid stuff. Baseball and Softball seasons are kicking into high gear.

I've been sick for the last three weeks. Probably most of it is related to change of seasons and allergies. I'm getting better, though.

Work is still the same. Too many hours and little reward. I'm glad to have the job though and know that I'm fortunate that I don't have to work outside everyday like I used to.

I've been a bit down emotionally lately. I'm hoping with the coming of Spring that this condition will improve. I've also started taking a thyroid med for my underactive thyroid. Hopefully this will allow me to shed some of this excess weight and have a more optimistic outlook.

I'll try to update more often.

Small Update

Not too much new happening.

Spent a bit of time on each of the last few days with the chainsaw and the truck. We got some trees cut down in the area where we will (eventually) be putting in an in-ground pool with waterfall and slide. I've been cleaning up the mess from downing about 10 really big trees. Of course my chain saw is not one of those industrial ones. I've got the Craftman model for homeowners. Let me tell you... it is NOT designed for the work I'm making it do.
Anyway... still a couple of trees to cut up into 18-24" pieces. There will be plenty of wood for my boys to split next Spring!

Looks like most of our clan is just about done with all that sickness mess that was going around. I've just about shaken my cough. Definitely getting tired of swigging the "tussin" from the bottle!

Baseball season is starting to rev up. Got several kids playing ball this year so we should be on the road a good bit.

Gas prices are killing me (as I'm sure they are everyone else). Sometimes I'd just love to stop driving altogether.

Sure would be nice to win the powerball... $275 million! But I don't play the lottery. Have you ever done the "what if" game with that much money!? Oh well.

Happy Anniversary to Me!

It's that time of year again!
Today marks the 23rd anniversary of our trip to the court house in Opelika, Alabama.
23 years of holy headlock as Steven Curtis Chapman calls it.

I gotta say that this particular anniversary will probably be totally uneventful. I will spend most of the day asleep (I'm working nights this weekend). My wife will spend most of the day at an Awana competition. We'll see each other in passing a couple of times but that's about it.

Hopefully we'll go out to dinner sometime later next week.
The reality of it is, I've got some type of bronchial mess happening and giving her a kiss today would be a bad idea. She really doesn't need to be sick. So, I'll wish her a happy anniversary by card and email and try to do a few more items on the honey do list. That will have to suffice for today.

I don't know... seems like I should put more significance on the celebration of our wedding anniversary. Sorry to say that it has become "just another day" much like most of the holidays throughout the year. Is this normal? Is this what happens to most people? I think I need to spend some time with the Lord and get some refining done. Can I get an amen?

Finally some snow!

It's not much and it won't be there by afternoon, but we finally have a couple of inches of snow on the ground! I LOVE snow! I love walking in it, driving in it and playing in it. I wish we could have more of it.

I know some of my readers have had their fill of snow for life and I'm sorry about that, but where I live, we don't get much and I celebrate when we do!

On another note... from the realm of what goes around comes around... Remember a few posts back when my youngest was assisted into the fireplace by one of his siblings (and by this I mean pushed - although it was accidentally)? Well, said sibling was laughing and scratching (an expression used by my college band director when we were fooling around at practice) in the living room and somehow got his feet crossed up and (you guessed it!) fell head first into the fireplace. Or rather onto the hearth of the fireplace. Split his forehead open! I wasn't there this time and at the time of the injury, neither was my wife!! She arrived a few minutes after it happened. My third daughter took care of things in the mean time. The boy ended up with 7 stitches and will now have a scar on his once blemish-free face.

I somehow missed getting these types of injuries as a boy. I waited until I was an adult to split my skull open and break bones. Oh well, I guess they saw all the fun I had with it and decided they wanted the same scars. Three of my sons have facial scars now similar to mine. A fourth has his on the back of his head. Six of my kids have broken bones in various locations and body parts. Several have had multiple broken bones.

On yet another note, today is my oldest son's birthday! I gave him his present on Monday since he needed it to work on his go cart. When I was younger, my Dad started giving me tools for birthdays and Christmas. The whole idea was that I would have most of the tools I needed once I was old enough to go out on my own. I thought this was a great idea and so I've decided to start doing the same with my sons. Don't think me sexist for not giving my girls tools. The reality of it is that they haven't needed them. I'm sure there will come a time when they do and I'll be sure to give them the tools at that time.

This is going to get expensive over the next 10 years as my sons (and daughters) age. But it will be worth it!

Well, after reading my wonderful wife's very 'descriptive' journal from yesterday, its quite fun to be typing this from my couch. Yep, I'm home! The doctors came in at 6am this morning and said they were ready for me to leave them alone. Can't describe how good it feels. What was supposed to be 7-10 days turned into 21 so home has a whole new meaning.

I am feeling good and so thankful for all of your prayers. I am sure the other half may have more to say but wanted you to hear from me first.

Happy Valentine's Day,
We are so thankful to be home. To sleep in our own bed, to use our own shower to sit on the couch and to pet our dog is each one a gift. Driving David home was like transporting a prisoner of war. For 21 days he had not seen the outside world. His eyes had to adjust to real sunlight as opposed to florescent light, his sense of smell had to take in the smell of fresh air as opposed to a scent we both hope we never have to endure again - the smell of things no human should have to live with.
There is so much more to recover from than what we anticipated when he went in for the surgery. David has lost a lot of weight so he even looks a little like a prisoner of war. Recovering his appetite will take time. He is going up and down the stairs - although his BF Geoff was hoping he would need to carry him up and down the stairs. Geoff reasoned if he had to carry David up the stairs it would be the one favor David could never repay. Sorry Geoff you will still owe David for now.
Speaking of owe, we are forever in your debt for all your prayers, cards, gifts and encouragement. Love everyone around you well today and everyday.

Prayers: Praise for the healing that is on going and no complications here at home. Pray his wound continues to heal at a supernatural rate. Pray his strength will return. Pray his appetite and ability to digest food will return. Pray our family can catch up and adjust.

David Lipscomb

Not sure how many of you know the Lipscomb family. Dale and DJ are in The Following with Caleb and Will Chapman. David is their father. He was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Not sure of all the details, but I would ask that you please pray for their family. Pancreatic cancer is a particularly nasty type of cancer that has a fairly high mortality rate. I don't know the stage or status of David's condition. I'll hopefully find out some more information soon.

I've met this family on a couple of occasions. Very nice folks.

I'll update with what ever I find out. I was able to get a little update on my friend Kelby's blog.

Lost a week!

So where does the time go anyway?!
Today is February 9th. We're already into the second week of February! I must be getting old. Seems like Christmas was only a couple of days ago.

I went to the doctor yesterday so they could look at my hand and tell me that it looks good. I still have numbness around the surgery area, but he said that would disapate in the next few weeks. Glad to hear that since I find that numbness worse than the finger numbness was. I still plan to post some pictures one of these days.

I spent an hour today using the chainsaw to cut up some cherry trees that I needed to remove. Felt good to finally be working with my hands again!

Neat news I found out tonight:
Caleb Chapman has finished production on a solo EP. He has a few copies that they are taking on the Spring leg of the "This Moment" tour. Not sure when it will be available for those not going to the show this part of the tour. You can hear the songs on his new site: calebchapman.com
Some pretty good stuff! Guess the genetics are working for him! lol!

More about the injury

I was reminded of which of my kids don't handle this type of accident well and which do. A couple were almost hysterical in their panic, some fairly neutral and a couple became withdrawn and fearful. I think we've gotten most of them past that and comforted. The amount of blood and the way it was dripped into a couple of rooms, all down his clothes (and my wife's), probably freaked them out the most. I don't recall any of the other kids bleeding that much or that fast before. I just had to send some of them outside so that we would be better able to calm him down. My wife did real well with that whole blood thing for as long as she could. Once the paramedics were there, she was able to take a few minutes away and lay down. She had gotten very pale and sickly looking. I'm proud of the way she held that off for as long as she did.

It was interesting to watch my son as different things would happen. He was fairly predictable in how he reacted to each activity. Granted, he was miserable and didn't want anyone to mess with him. He would fight as hard as he could to keep the paramedics, nurses and doctors from touching him. No matter how much they talked to him, he wouldn't be convinced that they weren't going to cause him more pain and discomfort. I realize that this is typical for his age. Fortunately, my wife was able to settle him down between each new poke and prod.

When the stitches were finally in, and he was released from the board that they strapped him to, he stood up on the gurney, stomped his foot, folded his arms and gave everyone a look that communicated his indignance very clearly. I almost started laughing and wish I'd had my camera. It was classic behavior and helped everyone know that he was going to be just fine.

My wife is doing the best she can to keep him settled today. He's his old self and wants to race around the house and do all his usual activities.

Close Call!

Last night my youngest son got knocked down onto the fireplace slate and gashed the back of his scalp. He and my wife took an ambulance ride to the local children's hospital and I followed a little later. He ended up getting a CT scan and four stitches (along with a little trimmed hair). Results of the scan are normal.

He never lost conscientiousness and didn't throw up at all. There was a good bit of blood as is usual for this type of wound, but not enough to cause them to give IV fluids. We were in and out in less than 4 hours.

He was doing fine when I left this morning for work. I checked in on him and he popped up to look at who was turning on his light. Wanted to know where his stickers were that they gave him at the hospital. I told him they were on his bed and to go back to sleep.

Skillet (the passing of the drum torch) and a personal update

Lori Peters is leaving Skillet and that makes me sad.
She is arguably one of the most talented female rock drummers (not to mention rock drummers in general) I've ever heard. She will be replaced by a new 18 year old drum prodigy (I hope) named Jen Ledger.

The following is from an email from John Cooper (founder of the band):

"Hey Panheads! We are out on tour bringing the rock to Winter Jam and loving it! Thanks to all of you who have already come out and supported us!!

I am writing an email to let everyone know about a change in the life of Skillet. Some of you already know, or have been speculating that Lori our drummer is no longer with Skillet. Unfortunately, this is the case. Lori told us about two months ago that she feels that it's time for her to come off of the road and start a new chapter in her life. We are of course going to miss her!! I wanted to let you all know sooner but the task of finding another drummer and getting prepared for this tour right on top of Christmas was overwhelming. On top of that Lori was finishing up the year and helped us train a new player so it was a bit premature to make any announcement.

Lori’s last show with us was New Years Eve where we rocked it out together for one last time! She is going to miss all of the loyal fans who have been so supportive of the "coolest chick drummer ever!"

Lastly, we wanted to wait to make this announcement after we had a new drummer in place so there would not be those who think that Skillet is over. We are far from it! So as you know know we are losing an awesome girl drummer, and replacing her with another awesome girl drummer! We will let you guys know more about the new member soon, but for now, her name is Jen Ledger; she just turned 18; and she is looking forward to rockin your faces off!

In other news...
My recovery continues. Still not able to use my left hand for much more that typing and sometimes holding a glass. My time off from work is quickly coming to an end. I've accomplished almost nothing on my list that I made of things to be fixed/repaired while off from work. I'm resolved to that end now, though I wish it were different. At least the bills are still getting paid. I'm thankful for the sick leave I've been able to use. Can't imagine having to take this time off without a regular (albeit reduced) paycheck coming in.

One of these days I'll post a couple of pictures of my hand as it heals. Not too bad looking for those of you with weak stomachs.

Please keep my oldest in prayer. She is still living with us and still unemployed. She has been given a couple of deadlines for getting her life back on track. Hopefully she will begin to take some initiative in the next few days.

Please also pray for my second. She will be starting again at a new college in a few days and there are still many details to be worked out. The main one being financial assistance.

Going on down the list... my next three are all struggling in school and haven't got the best of grades so far this year. I'm sure most of it is their lack of motivation, but the fact remains that they somehow need to get back on track and work very hard to be able to finish the year well. I don't know how to motivate them. This has always been hard for me. I don't want to be too strict and cause them anguish. I want to push, but not break their spirits. My wife is so much better at this encouragement thing.

The younger school aged kids are all doing well. Their work hasn't gotten that hard, yet.

The youngest ones are fine. Their life consists of play mostly. They have that down pretty well. They just need me to be more playful with them...

Recovery and Rich Mullins

It's been odd being so out of touch with work for such a long period of time. Reality of it is that I don't miss it at all.

The surgery went well and without any complications. I now have no numbness in my fingers for the first time in years.

I had my 12 stitches removed a few days ago and it feels like my hand might split apart without the support. They taped the surface and say that the hand should continue healing well in the next few days. I'm wearing a brace to protect it.

I can't put much pressure on it at all. The Doctor says it'll be a couple more weeks before I get full use back. I think it'll be much longer.

I still plan to return to work full time on Sunday the 20th (day shift). I should be able to perform the majority of my tasks without assistance, although I don't think I'll be able to do a lot of grip and pull related activities with my left hand.

I'm bored and unable to tackle my list of chores, so I've been feeling kind of useless. Hopefully this changes as the healing progresses. Seems unfair to have all this time off from work and not be able to accomplish anything that needs doing around the house.

During my time off, I've been exploring GodTube videos and came upon some old concert footage from Rich Mullins. Seeing this old footage reminds me of how much I've loved Rich's music over the years and of how the Lord has used this talented man (even in death) to minister to me.

My heart is heavy as I type this...
My prayers go out to the Hasenbalgs and Chapmans. I can't imagine the pain of losing a child since it has never happened to me. Pray for their hearts to be comforted by the only One who truly understands.

Hard Morning

Friends, I write with a heavy heart this morning. I'd appreciate your prayers on behalf of close friends.

Some very sad news I wanted you to know. Kerry Hasenbalg, wife to Executive Director of Shaohannah’s Hope Scott Hasenbalg, lost her baby last night just 3 weeks from delivery. Apparently, there were 2 knots in her chord which ended her life but in Scott's words... "we know she is in greater arms than ours."

Please pray for this amazing man and women as they grieve.

Also... Steven’s father had a mild heart attack last night as well. It appears he is stable at this time, and the doctor's don't think the damage was severe. He woke up in the nite and was taken immediately to the hospital about 10:00pm with chest pains. They took him straight in and started working on him. Though stable, he's still having some pain so he's still in critical care.

As you know SCC is in the UK at a very special songwriter gathering. Pray for Steven as he walks through this time.

Quick Update

Surgery went well. I have zero numbness in my left hand (I used to have nearly constant numbness). I am struggling with keeping the splint and wrapping on. My arm itches terribly!

I have 5 more days before I can remove the covering.
The pain has been manageable. I've taken only about a dozen pain pills since Monday.

The hardest thing is not being able to use my hand. Today was such a nice day and we were trying to do some work in the yard. I felt so helpless. Couldn't even rake leaves well.
It was a good day anyway, though. We still got a lot accomplished and had fun with the kids.
Tomorrow I will be able to do more...

Mixed Feelings

Christmas was a mixture of feelings for me this year.

We hosted my extended family (most of them) at our home. We've actually been having all of the family gatherings at our house the last couple of years. I think it's easier on us to not have to pack up and drive. I'm pretty sure my wife likes it that way too. Everyone brings food to share, so we don't have to supply it all.

I really thought we'd hit it out of the park on some of the gifts that we bought the kids. That wasn't the case for some of them.

The go cart went over real well... right up until we couldn't get it to start. It was cold out and the choke wasn't working right. I ended up working on it for a while to get it to run again. The kids got a couple of hours of fun out of it before shutting it off to come in and visit with relatives. When they went out later to run it again, it wouldn't start again. I didn't have any more time to work on it, so it has been sitting since. I'm going to get it fixed by a professional one time only. Then it will be up to the kids to maintain it.

The scooter we bought didn't really hold a good charge and my second son was disappointed when it ran out of juice so quickly. I told him to try it for a few more charge cycles and then we will see. If it doesn't run long enough, we will return it and get something else.

We also bought a "rip stick" for our third son. Only problem there... we don't have paved surface (except in the packed garage) for him to ride it on. So, we need to drive him to a local skate park for him to ride it.

So, not exactly hitting it out of the park.

The digital cameras and carhart bibs went over well, though. As well as most of the stuff we bought for the little ones. Win some, lose some.

Sometimes I just wish we could forget about all the gift giving and spend the day enjoying each other's company. Put the focus back on the birth of Christ.

Gotta remember that. It's not about the gifts. It's about Christ coming to earth in the form of a man to offer a way back to the Father.

New Year's coming. I go under the knife in 3 days.

Hope this day is special for my readers. I know that it has been a rough year for a lot of you. I can really identify and sympathize.

I am in the midst of an 11 day stretch where I am working every day for at least 12 hours. I don't mind the work, but due to the holidays I'm not getting much sleep during the day.

I will get plenty of sleep in January, though. I will be going in on New Year's Eve at 0730 to have my surgery. The procedure will only last 15 minutes and I will be able to leave in an hour. Kind of like photo processing... ;-P I'll be off from work for three weeks following the surgery. I don't know that I'll need all that time off to recover, but I plan to take it anyway since it is what the Doctor recommends and I have the sick time. Might as well take advantage of the opportunity to be away from the workplace. Maybe I'll finally get some of the work done around the house.

I spent a couple of hours here at work fixing the go cart that I bought for the kids. It took a bit to get it running, but now it goes fast and will surely be a hit with my oldest son. It's fairly well used, but in good condition. Hopefully it won't break down for a while. It will be an opportunity for the boys to learn small engine repair since they will most likely have to fix things on it as they go. They are good kids. They asked for one that was used, knowing that it would save some money. They are willing to work on it... just want it to run when they get it. So... mission accomplished.

Can't wait to see their expressions in a few hours! My wife and I did a good job of purchasing some of the "desired" items on the kids lists. Usually we pay more attention to "needs", but we felt that this was a year for "wants".

To two of my own precious kids! They were born on the same day, two years apart.
I'm stuck at work today, but will buy them each a little present on the way home.

I actually have done a little Christmas shopping this year. Not much, but a few things. The older the kids get, the more expensive the gifts seem to be. I've been able to pick up a few of the larger items they've wanted for years now. The kids were willing to get the stuff used (as long as it works!), so I went on Craigslist and found a 1 year old drum set (actually bought two, but will be reselling one of them) and a go kart. I'm looking at another go kart that seats 2 people.

I also bought one of those electric Razor scooters new, from Pep-boys.

Now I'll have to buy some helmets for safety.

Bought a digital camera for one of my girls.

Will be buying a set of Carharts (cold weather jacket and bib overalls) for my 2nd daughter. She'll need them for working out in the cold as she trains and cares for horses. Speaking of my 2nd daughter... she has transferred from the college in South Carolina to one in New Jersey. Much closer to home and probably better suited to her (current) major.

Still lots of stuff to buy. I always wait until the last few days for some reason.
My wife and I will not be exchanging gifts this year. That will free up the cash for the kids. Although, I will still try to buy her something.

I started off the season feeling mildly depressed and not wanting to go through the whole ordeal. Pretty much wanted to just forget about it all. I'm feeling a little better now that Christmas is upon us. Still struggling a bit with the stress of all the work hours I'm putting in, but I think I have a little joy now. I've gone blog visiting and left some playful comments to my friends. Sometimes you just have to choose to be happy.

Maybe I'll watch "It's A Wonderful Life" tonight. "Buffalo gals won't ya come out tonight..."

7 Days Left!

Hard to believe that there are only 7 days left until Christmas!

My wife and I are going shopping today after I take a short nap. I've been at work all night and am having a hard time keeping my eyes open. Hope the drive home is uneventful...

I picked up a nice used go kart yesterday. It needs a little work on the engine and will be a good gift for the boys (and girls) to share. They should be surprised. They have almost given up on having one since I've always said no until now. I got a really good deal on it. Now I need to buy a helmet to go with it.

Lots of gifts to buy and not a lot of time to do it. Sounds like the typical Christmas rush to me. Some day, I'd like to try being organized and getting it done closer to Thanksgiving.

I'll be working 12 hours every day (or night) from the 20th thru the 30th. I guess that's one way to pay for all the gifts. One of the guys at work has worked the last 6 Christmas Eves and I figured I'd give him a chance to be home with family this year. I'm also covering for another guys vacation for three days.

I'll be taking most of January off due to having carpul tunnel surgery on my left wrist on New Year's Eve. Pray for me if you think of it. I'm not real good with pain and the doctor says that this will be sore for a good while. Hopefully it will work as far as eliminating the pressure on that nerve and giving me better sensitivity to my fingers again. Also it should eliminate or greatly reduce the numbness in my fingers.

I'll have to type my posts with one hand for a while, but I'll try to update regularly.

As a result of me waiting too long to schedule my surgeries, and also the need for someone to work all the extra shifts, I will be postponing my surgeries until further notice.

I really need to get them done soon, but not this month... unless the doctor will do them on New Year's Eve...

Still No Time

Here it is December 4th already and I still don't seem to have any time to provide a decent update.

I've picked up 10 extra shifts between now and the end of the year, too, so it doesn't look like I'll be getting any less busy any time soon.

Praise God for His provision of the extra work (and extra pay!) at this particular time. He knows what I need before I do.

Know anyone who would be interested in buying a gently used 2007 Pontiac Solstice? I'm feeling led to divest of this particular asset at this time and put the money to better use.

Lots of excitement in our house (well, mostly me and my wife) about adoption and the possibilities.

I've been meaning to add some posts these last couple of days, but can't seem to get myself situated and in a writing mood.
I started a post about the Nashville trip a week ago and haven't gotten back to it. I need to get my notebook out and relive the moments so they are fresh again. That way the writing will be entertaining and not boring.

My boss has finally hired another person to fill the spot vacated several months ago. It will take another 6 weeks to train him. I plan to have carpul tunnel surgery on my left wrist in a couple of weeks and will be out most of the rest of December. Except the last week... I'll be working 84 hours that week. Should have scheduled the surgery in November, but I didn't think about it then.

Guess updates in the New Year will be typed with one hand for a while.
